there has to be communication between the two sides in order for the exhaust pulses to blend together. if they are separate, then the exit of the exhaust is pulsatile... which is not a smooth and efficient way to flow. by blending the exhaust pulses together, each pulse from one side kind of "fills in the gap" between the other side's pulses and helps to "pull" the exhaust out. so, there is theoretically faster exhaust gas exit with an H or X pipe. realistically, if your straight pipes are bigger diameter than stock, then there is probably not much difference in terms of hp as the stock exhaust. if they're smaller diameter, then maybe you're losing some hp. anyways, you'll probably gain 5-10hp if you go with the H or X pipe. again, this is all just theory and the numbers are just made up... so take it with a grain of salt.
